Best Tips for Your Colorado Senior Portrait Session

Why You Should Join a Senior Rep Program

Navigating everything for your senior session can be stressful! That’s where I come in. As one of the best Senior Photographers in Denver and expertise from over 100 senior sessions I can help you from everything from outfit planning, locations, hair, makeup and everything in between. Here are some of the best tips for your Colorado senior portrait session.

Location

To start, choose a location that feels like you. It’s my job to not only get the perfect yearbook shot but to also make sure your personality is highlighted in your senior portraits. If you love the coffee, why not choose your favorite coffee shop? If you love the mountains, what about a trailhead or overlook. Love Chick-Fil-A? Let’s go to Chick-Fil-A! You get the gist. Often times during my senior sessions, clients get more than one location. So be sure to check with your photographer on the number of locations you can utilize.

Lighting

Second, it’s important to have optimal lighting for your session. Lighting can make or break your senior portraits. If you want warm dewy and golden light it is best to choose a time during golden hour. Golden hour is just before sunrise and just before sunset. If you want bold and dramatic light and shadows during the day may be your best bet. It’s important to choose a senior photographer who understand lighting and can tell you exactly when you should have your session. Depending on your location you might have to keep in mind that the sun may set earlier than expected.

Props

Next, what are you known for? What are your hobbies? What do you love? If you play sports, bring your letterman jacket. Live on a ranch? Maybe you want to use your cows or horses in some of your shots. The sky is the limit. These props will make your senior photos special and unique! Sometimes it also takes any nerves out of your session if you have something to hold or interact with during your portraits.

Outfits

It is so important to dress like you! Nothing will make you more uncomfortable or stressed than by dressing in outfits that you don’t normally wear. I always recommend having a few outfit changes during your Colorado Senior session. This allows you to have a “dressy” option, casual, etc. I offer styling consultations during the planning process of all my Colorado Senior sessions. During these consultations we go over outfit choices, colors, patterns, accessories, etc. This helps ensure that my seniors are wearing outfits they are excited about and comfortable in.

Be Silly, Be You

Lastly, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through! Want to jump in the air? Stick out your tongue? Do you want a photo to capture how you hype yourself up before a game? The best senior portraits are when senior’s embrace their personality and show it in their session.
