Tips & Tricks to Consider for your DIY Mommy and Me Photo How To
- Make sure you choose a time of day and room with sufficient natural light so you don’t have to turn on household lights.
- Keep it simple and fun. Something like capturing a candid moment of getting ready in the morning, making a meal together, story time, play, etc. Can not only be beautiful but will be a memory that you will treasure.
- No need to ensure that everyone is perfectly put together and matching, if you don’t want to. You can capture life as it is, with kiddo in their chosen outfit of the day and you in your comfies. Maybe a cluttered counter because you guys are making breakfast together.
- Get creative with the foreground and angles. No need to stress about a needing a tripod if you don’t have one. Prop your phone up against a glass, book, etc. Play around with it shooting low and hight. Having foreground distraction leading to you and kiddo(s), etc can create visual interest.

What I Created
I decided to take some fun photos of me and my bump for my Mother’s Day photo memories. Self portraits can be such a fun way to express creativity and play around with different ideas. Mainly because at the end of the day, you only have to arrange yourself. So if you have kiddos and you want to do some self portraits, I highly recommend the following.
- Start setup while kiddos are up in the area you want to utilize.
- Wait until nap time or until kiddo(s) are engaged in an activity to start capturing your self portraits. This will help minimize interruption so you can get it done efficiently.
