Whether you are taking photos with a dslr, point and shoot or your phone, these tips can be applied and help you!

Find the Light!

  • This first step will dramatically help your photos! Natural light is the most flattering type of light. I recommend taking photos near a window, during the day time. Below are a couple examples that are sooc (straight out of camera), no editing and taken with my Iphone to give you a visual of what I am talking about.
So this is my setting, I am going to be taking a photo of that cream colored vase. But just wanted to show you that there are two windows letting in lots of natural light.
I intentionally took a photo of the vase at a vantage point that allowed natural light to hit my subject directly, one of the windows is behind me. I stood so I wasn’t blocking light but allowing it to hit my subject. In this photo it shows the vase and faux leaves true to color.
Smokey decided to hop in and be my model but here you can see the light is hitting him directly, he is true to color in this image.
When you choose a vantage point that is not allowing natural light to hit your subject the result will be shadowed and dark. If you only saw this image it would be hard to know his true coloring.
I took the vase into our bathroom, which is the only room of the house with no window or natural light source. Using the overhead light does not accurately reflect the color of the vase and leaves. The wall color is white, but it is hard to tell this (even for me, I live here) because the color temperature from the light is not reflecting natural light.

The images where the subject has access to natural light and is taken so the light hits the subject directly are more appealing than the rest. Implementing this first step will dramatically change your photos!

Rule of Thirds

  • Some cameras or camera apps for your phone will show this on their LCD screen but for your phones regular camera you will have to visualize. Split the screen into thirds in each direction. You will want your subject or main point of focus to fall within or on the intersecting lines.

Hold still and Focus on your subject

  • Hold still and focus on your subject! For me it’s my cats but for you it may be your littles. Make sure they are in focus. There is nothing worse than looking at a blurry image.
  • When the light is low and your subjects are not in good light be sure to do the following:
  1. Stand as still as possible
  2. Make sure to tuck your elbows into your side
  3. Maintain breathing, do not hold your breath
  4. Make sure to stand in a way that you are balanced

Keep it simple

  • Keep it simple. I find images that have “too much going on” to be a bit distracting from the main subject. So if my focus is the ring, I like to make sure I tidy up things around it so it can be focal point.

Watch your horizon and leading lines

  • Watch your horizon and leading lines. You will see the difference between the first and second photos. Make sure you look at the horizon and any lines, angles, etc that might be in your image and make sure they are straight.
